Numbers 3:1-51 Reserved For The Lord | The Bible Teaching Commentary

In Numbers 3, God reserves the Levites for holy service and appoints Aaron’s sons to the priesthood. Their calling points to redemption, holiness, worship, and the greater priesthood fulfilled in Christ and His people.

One of the main focuses of the Book of Numbers is to emphasize the importance of the Levites' role, or even more broadly, the role of the priests. Their role was crucial to the closeness with which God dwelled among man. It is much easier for us to consider God as nearly on the same level as man, but both the Old Testament and the New Testament contradict this. God is not just a step above man but is in a completely different realm. He is holy, and we are not. Let’s examine who the priests were and how they were chosen for their roles. This will give us a deeper understanding of our roles as Christians, for we are His royal priesthood and a holy nation (1 Pet 2:9).

A. Aaron And His Sons’ Roles (Nu 3:1-4, 10)

  • a) Aaron & Moses (brothers from a good family - yet God’s choice)
  • Ex 2:1-2, 6:20 (6:16-27) see Priestly Families Chart
  • b) Aaron’s 4 sons (2 killed, 2 lived): Nadab, Abihu, Eleazar, Ithamar
  • c) Role of Aaron’s sons: Ordained to serve as priests.
  • 1) God honored this family through Aaron and Moses. God enjoys blessing families (Jonathan Edwards).
  • 2) We quickly come to understand God’s strict rules: obey or face death. There are no other options. God chose to establish this family.
  • 3) We also see the official role of the priesthood as being given to man as a mediator between God and people.

B. Levi Tribe’s Role (Nu 3:5-10, 25-26, 31-32,36-37)

  • a) Dedicated: Wholly given to Aaron and his sons
  • b) Purpose: Serve Aaron and Israel for the Tabernacle
  • Gershon *Keeper of the Tabernacle’s covering (tent)
  • Kohath *Keeper of the Tabernacle’s furnishings & their service
  • Eleazar *
  • Merari *Keeper of the Tabernacle’s structure and frame
  • 1) Some might find this situation unfair, but as we will see in the next section, this service is God’s grace to the Levites. He ransomed them just as He has ransomed His people.
  • 2) It is good that God ensured the care of the tent, which is very important. Anything God appoints us to do is worthwhile, even like Adam in the garden. It reminds us that maintaining our relationship with God is a priority—testimony to God’s presence, an opportunity for service, and a sense of fulfillment.

C. Theology Of Choosing Levites (Nu 3:11-51)

  • a) Exchange of Levites with firstborn (3:11-12)
  • God directed. Fair (see c.). Exact [add up both sides]
  • b) Meaning behind the exchange (3:13, 40-51; Ex 13:1-2, 11-16)
  • Displayed zeal for holiness
  • c) Advantage and reason for exchange (Ex 32:28-29)
  • God recognizes our holy, dedicated work and so rewards us.
  • 1) God’s choice may seem unexplainable or unreasonable, but we recognize that His blessing is the greatest. This highlights the importance of belief: understanding that His demands and requests are best. Teens may dislike rules or feel called to full-time ministry or missions.
  • 2) There are reasons for God’s actions, even if we don’t understand them. Redemption involves a fair exchange between the Israelites He saved and what He has called them to do. Be careful to follow through on any ‘deals’ made with the Lord; He remembers them carefully.
  • 3) God rewards faithfulness. He loves those who pursue holiness (behavior aligned with His nature). We know He will reward those who seek it. Be firm in your heart not to settle for mediocrity.
