Numbers 5:1-31 Kept for Holy Living Living | The Bible Teaching Commentary
In Numbers 5, holiness reaches into the whole camp. God addresses uncleanness, hidden wrongs, broken trust, and jealous suspicion, teaching His people to live honestly before His presence.
Numbers 5 Bible Study Overview
This Numbers 5 Bible study highlights God’s concern for holy living among His people, especially when His presence dwells in their midst. The chapter addresses uncleanness in the camp, honest confession, restitution, and the difficult law of jealousy, all of which reveal that God’s standards, methods, and judgments must correct human feelings and assumptions. This commentary helps readers see Numbers 5 as more than an ancient regulation; it is a searching passage about purity, covenant faithfulness, moral accountability, and the need to examine every area of life in the light of God’s holiness.
We often think that our activities in the church are what God desires. By serving as a deacon, trustee, cook, etc., we believe God is pleased. While this is very important, God’s greater concern—and the focus of this chapter—is to keep holy people close to Him. In this context, He is not talking about specific individuals set apart from God (see ch. 6), but about all of His people. Let’s explore what conditions the Lord has placed on Himself.
A. His Holiness Versus Our Standards (Nu 5:1-4)
- a) His Will Against Our Feelings (Nu 5:1)
- b) Unclean must leave the camp
- Every leper
- Everyone is having a discharge,
- Everyone who is unclean because of a dead person.
- c) Irrespective of one’s sex
- d) Must remain outside the camp and dwell in their midst
- e) The Israelites did just as commanded (v. 4)
This command perhaps doesn’t fully settle in until we have a wife, a daughter who must suddenly leave the camp. But no matter who we are, we must remember the costs associated with God being in the midst of His people. It might not be what everyone thought or felt was right (probably odd), but God willed it. The principles of discipline remain the same. We do it not because we feel like it but because it is proper. If we are a leader, we lovingly enforce His rules, and if we find ourselves subject to them, we, in submission to His wise ways, accept them.
B. His Methods In Contrast To Our Methods (Nu 5:5-10)
- a) His Will Against Our Understandings (Nu 5:5)
- b) The fact of our sins (6)
- c) Dealing with our sins (7)
- d) Handling exceptions (8)
- e) Principles operating behind the scenes (9-10)
God deals with us differently because He sees us differently than we typically see ourselves. A key lesson of holiness is learning to accept an objective view of our true nature. Notice how we must face our sins and not hide from them—a vital principle in the Christian life.
C. His Examination Versus Our Examination (Nu 5:11-31)
- — The Law of Jealousy —
- a) The Lord’s Command’s view of immorality
- b) The Situation Needs a Solution
- Husband fears immorality in wife
- Unsettled fears damage relationships, so they must be addressed
- c) The Solution
- Determining guilt or innocence
- Husband leaves it to God
- Resolves the issue once and for all so the relationship can continue
I find it very interesting that God chooses to address this issue rather than many others. He is clear: immorality is wrong, but alongside this issue is another one—jealousy over one’s possession. The wife belonged to the husband, but if she went with another man, she gave herself to someone else, hence the word ‘cheat.’ God feels the same passion over His people’s hearts; He wants all of us. He doesn’t want us to stray from His way. But God understood the importance of this relationship and, in addition to stressing the seriousness of being unfaithful, He also wanted to settle the issue once and for all so that the relationship could continue warmly. To do this, He provided this unique means to discern the wife’s heart. If she is faithful, then there should be no doubt about the relationship, but if unfaithfulness is present, then the relationship cannot grow and must end.
Summary
We must examine our standards, methods, and interpretations in light of God. His will is always the best, and we should never hesitate to declare that His ways are best for our lives and confidently proclaim the greatness of His ways to others.
