Numbers 2:1-34 Organized For A Purpose | The Bible Teaching Commentary

Numbers 2 shows Israel arranged around one holy center: the presence of God. This study explores how the tribal camp order teaches worship, unity, leadership, responsibility, and the need to organize life around the Lord.

A well-organized system shows its priorities, goals, and purposes. Simply put, how we schedule our lives and the habits we develop daily reflect what our lives are really about. Let’s carefully examine how the Lord instructed the armies to organize, as many sound principles can be learned from this and applied to our own lives.

A. Stresses Equal Responsibility (ch. 1 & 2)

  • a) All tribes were organized
  • Command from top-up; not volunteer
  • Levites excluded but included
  • b) All capable men utilized

People need to understand that they have a role in what they belong to. They have a responsibility to contribute to the group. The more responsibility one shares, the more power they exercise and the stronger their sense of belonging. All the capable men were called up, but even the Levites had their own duties.

B. Clarifies Leadership Responsibility (Authority)

  • a) Each tribe had a leader
  • b) Each quarter section had a leader
  • c) Moses and Aaron at the head
  • d) God at the real head and center

Groups can only function with a leader. And several leaders can’t operate effectively without a leader above them. Even in the Trinity, we observe a hierarchy of authority. The Son submits to the Father. This example of authority has been deeply ingrained in our hearts. We must be very careful in choosing our leaders.

C. Encourages Distinction Under Unity

  • a) Leaders
  • b) Banners
  • c) The Lord as Center (brings unity of purpose and power)

A leader’s authority is recognized as long as those within the group can submit to it. However, this is closely linked to the sense of belonging that members feel toward the group. The stronger the group’s identity, the greater the likelihood of a leader and the obligation of allegiance.

D. Enables Each Tribe To Be Equally Close To God

  • a) Spaced around in a circle rather than in other ways
  • b) Importance of God shown equally to all

Of utmost importance is the fairness regarding the natural leader - the LORD. They all were equally close to the Lord, which indicated that the leaders (or the four leading tribes) were not particularly close to the Lord.

E. Shows The Importance of God

  • a) God’s vision and purpose (influenced all)
  • b) God’s Power was to be
  • c) His Place was the most secure place (protected well from all sides)

With God at the center, everyone was constantly reminded of their role and purpose. They couldn’t move elsewhere because they would leave a gap, abandon the critical privileged position with the Lord, and expose themselves to many dangers alone.
