Numbers 4:1-49 Designed for Holy Activity | The Bible Teacher’s Commentary
Numbers 4 teaches that holy service must be done with reverence and care. Through the duties of the Kohathites, Gershonites, and Merarites, we see how God assigns His work, protects His holiness, and calls His people to serve faithfully.
This Numbers 4 Bible study examines the careful assignment of holy duties to the Kohathites, Gershonites, and Merarites, showing that God’s work must be approached with reverence, precision, and obedient order. The chapter reveals that holiness is not an abstract doctrine but a practical reality shaping who serves, how they serve, and what precautions must be taken near the sacred things of God. This commentary helps readers understand Levite responsibilities, the danger of treating holy service casually, and the continuing Christian call to use God-given gifts faithfully while respecting the holiness of the Lord.
The Lord’s concerns often go far beyond and sometimes oppose what we usually choose or decide to do. Perhaps this chapter is one we prefer to ignore or at least avoid. However, because this is our reaction to these matters, we must all the more dutifully remember to prioritize God’s concerns. Otherwise, we cannot even begin to understand the character of His holiness, let alone possess this holiness.

We often overlook the significance of holiness. We recognize the need not just to speak of being holy but to actualize holiness in our lives. The Levites were chosen, along with Aaron and his sons to perform the most sacred tasks, followed by the Kohathites to handle the next level of holy work, then the Gershonites and Merarites. All of these duties were sacred, but even within this holy service, God designates some responsibilities as more suitable for certain individuals than others.
We should regularly implement oversight and assign roles based on abilities. Interestingly, these roles were given to men, which was directed by God. Women played their part as helpers to their husbands. These permanent roles provide valuable experience and specialization. God appreciates this order and respect.
B. Gathering the Totals (4:34-49)
Counted the Kohathites available for service: 2750 (4:34-37)
Counted the Gershonites available for service: 2630 (4:38-41)
Counted the Merarites available for service: 3200 (4:42-45)
Total Levites available for service (excluding Aaron’s family) 85802 (4:46-49)
Any design must have an overall picture or view of what one is trying to accomplish. This summary provides a broad view of God’s expectations for the Levites. Since this is God’s command, we should embrace this setup as well as the one He gives to us as the ‘holy priests’ of His kingdom (I Pe 2:9-11). He has given gifts appropriately. Our duties are set before us, but so is our overall task of reflecting God’s holiness and representing it to the world.
