Psalm 34:19 A Great Deliverer!

“Many are the afflictions of the righteous,
but the Lord delivers him out of them all.”
Psalm 34:19

Psalm 34:19 highlights a great difference between believers and nonbelievers—between those who know God and those who do not. The difference is vast.

Interestingly, the difference, as is commonly concluded, is not in the afflictions, troubles, or pain. The Lord says, “Many are the afflictions of the righteous.” In fact, if anything, believers will surely face different afflictions and troubles in life. But in reality, this holds true for every person living on this earth; we all live under the curse of sin.

The distinction isn’t about the problems we face, but about recognizing the Lord as our deliverer. Believers see our Lord differently because He does deliver us. The psalmist says He delivers us from all our difficulties — “out of them all.” There is no difficulty we face without His presence, promises, and power. Not one. We don’t know how He will help us, but as we call out to Him, we can expect this help. He brings help in many different ways. Never demand how He answers, just watch how he does. This verse helps His people trust Him, no matter what challenge or obstacle they face. We can keep going because He has gone on before us. “I am with you always, even until the end of the age.” (Mat 28:20)

THE LORD DELIVERS

This very verse might cause us concern because it assures us of the hardships we will face, but, on the bright side, it also provides great certainty and comfort to our troubled lives. The confidence and faith that come from His presence and power in these difficulties lead to joy, peace, and the ability to love people even in stressful situations.

Notice the connection between attempt and temptation.

His promises assure us that no person or situation is “too much” to handle. He will deliver us “out of them all.” Consider your difficulty and the help you need. Call out to Him for that help or deliverance. Contrary to the world’s view, which sees trusting in God as a crutch, we humbly recognize our need for God. Like a plant needs the sun to flourish, so we need God. We were made to lean on Him.

Some people, even those who are believers, might think that God is the source of evil and trouble during tough times. “Why did God do this to me?” As we learn from the book of Job, the devil works behind the scenes to cause more sin in our lives. He tempts us. The accuser, the Destroyer, attempts to trip us up and bring more problems into our lives. His goal is to destroy and take away what is good and beautiful. God, on the other hand, desires our success. But He knows that if we succeed without learning to trust Him more deeply, the evil one can use it to lead us into pride and arrogance, as we sometimes sadly see in the Scriptures.

Instead, we, in faith, find joy in these difficult times. God turns the challenges we face as His children into displays of His glorious presence, purpose, and power. We get to step back from every trouble and see how He will handle it, strategically and personally working out His grace and glory to bring about a greater good.

The Lord, then, uses these very circumstances to strengthen our faith in Him and show His mighty power to guide us, even during our hardest times. Since others see us in these moments, they begin to catch a glimpse of the God we serve.
