BGM09 Developing Trust in Your Marriage | Building a Great Marriage
Do you feel like your spouse is a closed book? The secret to a wife unfolding her heart and a husband opening up isn't luck—it's trust. Welcome to Session 9 of 'Building A Great Marriage.' Today, we’re looking at Developing Trust in Your Marriage.
In this session, we dive into the 'nuggets of gold' found in the Song of Solomon. We’ll explore the two major 'Triads' of a relationship: the Path of Trust and the Path toward Intimacy. We’ll talk about moving from criticism and bitterness to a place of total security where you can say, 'I am my beloved's and his desire is for me.' Whether you’ve struggled with insecurity or just want to take your friendship to the next level, these four steps to a great marriage will change your relationship dynamic.
Discussion & Reflection Questions
- Criticism and bitterness destroy trust. Can you think of a time when a critical spirit—either yours or your spouse's—caused one of you to "close up" emotionally?
- The first Triad (SS 1:5; 2:1; 2:16) starts by addressing insecurities ("I am black"). How does knowing you are "accepted in the Beloved" by God help you feel more secure in your spouse's love?
- The second Triad ends with "I am my beloved's and his desire is for me" (SS 7:10). What does "total surrender" to your spouse look like in a practical, daily sense?
- Of the four steps to a great marriage (Commitment, Interest in each other, Private talking time, and Quick forgiveness), which one is currently the strongest in your relationship? Which one needs the most work?
- Why is the "constant enriching" of a marriage through cherishing so vital to maintaining trust over many decades?
- Trust grows when we feel affirmed. What is one specific thing your spouse did this week that made you feel valued, and have you told them "thank you" for it yet?
Take Home Project: This week, spend at least 15 minutes of "private talking time" each day (not about chores or kids) to practice being interested in each other’s hearts. Seek to affirm one another at least three times a day.
