At the heart of discipleship is the following of Jesus. Although this phrase ‘to follow Jesus’ is often used, it is rarely understood. We generally think it means to try to love people like Jesus loved people. This act of love is an important aspect, of course, but it only catches one part of what it means to follow Jesus. To follow Jesus does not simply mean to know His teachings but to do what He did. We are to imitate the way He lived out His life, including His ministry. This call to imitation does not mean we will do what He did but approach life as He did. If we only imitate His works, we will not have the power to do His desired works for us (Eph 2:10). We will, in the end, not carry out His will. If we are to imitate Christ’s ministry and care for others, we will need first to be renewed in our lives by living like Him.
