Are Traditions Helping or Hurting Your Faith? A Biblical Word Study on Tradition

Traditions can be powerful teachers or dangerous blind spots. This teaching invites believers to grow discerning and anchored in both the Word and the Spirit.

Tradition—it's a word we hear often in churches, but what does the Bible actually say about it? This session from Paul J. Bucknell offers an extended word study on the Greek term paradosis, translated “tradition,” used 13 times in the New Testament.

Main Message

Scripture reveals two categories: traditions of men (which can nullify God’s Word) and apostolic traditions (which help preserve truth). Jesus criticized the Pharisees for elevating tradition above God’s commandments (Mark 7), while Paul encouraged believers to hold to what was handed down by the apostles (2 Thessalonians 2:15).

We examine how tradition shapes churches, for better or worse, and how Revelation 2–3 reminds us that right tradition is not enough—we must listen to the Spirit. The challenge is to evaluate our traditions: Are they rooted in Scripture? Do they point us to Christ or distract from Him?
